Doodling Hour in May
FREE
Come doodle for an hour at the end of your Thursday. Materials provided, conversation optional.
"Drawings, the best of them, pulsate in my mind; they are always nearly incandescent with opportunity: look at what the eye and the hand and the imagination can do together, let's take it up a notch! Let's go further! Today you can have a thought and call it a drawing and why not since drawing begins with a thought or the hope of birthing one from the subconscious?"

Protest Sign Drawing Workshop
$50
Drawing with words and slogans, posterized image, motifs, and forms in a way that gets your singular point across.
We'll talk about what it is we want to say, about what's the best way to express and communicate that on a sign, and get to work to make a sign that adds to the voices being seen at the next protest. No drawing experience required. Materials provided.
Pádraig Ó Tuama Poetry Drawing, Danielle Yang, 2024

4-6pm
Experimental Drawing
$225
Drawing as Celebration, as Meditation, as Score, as Diagram, as Dimensional.....
This is a three class course of drawing exploration and inquiry for students looking to expand their scope of drawing, and for students looking to enhance their portfolio work. We'll ask what constitutes drawing, what drawing is for, and how it can change the way we imagine ourselves and the world around us. We’ll work on technique and the skills needed to express ourselves clearly, and at the same time we’ll disorient ourselves to what we know drawing to be.
Poetry Drawing, Mikayel Mikayelyan, 2024

Correspondence Art Workshop
$75
Drawing for the mail
In this two hour workshop we'll chat about some of the ways in which correspondence art has been used, in Fluxus art practices, as protest, as a means of disseminating work away from the usual institutions, lovingly, not lovingly, etc... Then we'll get to work on drawing our own form of it, IRL and perhaps digitally too. Mixed media is provided, as long as it can be sent through mail.
Correspondence Art, Jade Jwa, 2024

Diagramming Your Life Workshop
$75
Data-visualization, mind-mapping, lists, and compositional techniques.....
This 2 hour workshop is for every level of experience and materials are provided. Students will be guided through warm-up drawing prompts while we'll ask ourselves what a diagram is, what we want from it today, and what aspects of our respective lives would be most gratifying to visualize. Dialogue depends on each students interest in and comfort with talking their work through, but technical and material guidance is offered throughout the workshop. We'll see what putting the flux of our lives to paper does for us.
Scott's Life Diagram, 2024

Introduction to Linear Perspective
$225
1 and 2 point Linear Perspective techniques covered in their most basic form.
During these three classes we'll learn the basics of creating that convincing sense of depth that the linear perspective technique can offer us. We'll draw from our minds' eye, from life and from Google Earth, and we'll fold in landscape drawing in relation to architecture. Who knows, we might even touch on 3 point perspective, and we'll definitely talk about when the kind of space that linear perspective depicts matters and when it doesnt and discuss why it gets so much play in art and media.
Shannon Ku, Linear Perspective Drawing, 2024

Parent/T(w)een Workshop
$150 per family
Observational Drawing with Twist....
This workshop is for middle/highschool-students and their parent/caregiver-students. In this multigenerational class we'll begin with observational drawing prompts, and then spring beyond that with some twists on collaboration and exchange. Materials provided.

Individual Drawing Instruction
$500
Drawing instruction that is personalized due to particular interests, an artistic goal, a current project, expanding ones practice, a portfolio in design or art, or simply because one-on-one is a better fit for the student.
After an initial meeting, a 5-class curiculum is crafted to fit the student's goals and interests, focusing on techniques and approaches along with conceptual challenges designed to broaden and advance their development. Curiculums are supple and student and instructor continue to shape them.
Driving Studies, Ava Hakakha, 2023

Small Group Drawing Class
$370
Cross Contour, Linear Perspective, Illustration Style, Gesture and Life Drawing, Plein-air Drawing, 3D Drawing, Observational Drawing....
Each class our small group will focus on building skill and practice a specific drawing approach, then we'll intentionally broaden to allow for experimentation and surprise. We'll follow our collective noses, but not to the point of wandering, and we'll put a real premium on building concentration and working on what we are not already good at. A small group allows us to take note of how art is both an inside and collaborative job; when it works to be in one's own zone, and when collective and group work is best.

Hour-long session, ongoing
Portfolio Consultation
100$
Online or in-person sessions for suggestions, thoughts and insights about/on/into an existing portfolio at any stage in the process.
These one-time or mutliple sessions are for assessing a portfolio that is in its beginning stages, in the works or almost finished. Our work can involve creating new drawings, choosing imagery and sequencing, distinguishing visual voice, working on the quality of documentation, and establishing continuity of vision. It can also involve writing about the artwork, using words to refocus the portfolio's through-line. Each session and project aims to be as effective and time-efficient as possible, keeping deadlines front of mind.

Online Introduction to Drawing
$300
Contour Line, Sketch Method, Line as Value, Continuous Tone, Linear Perspective, Color as Tone, and Drawing with Style.
Open to everyone from total beginners to experienced artists, this class is for students who want to learn to draw what they see before them. We’ll take on different ways of seeing, shifting focus between line, value, texture, proportion, spatial relations and color, and build up a toolbox of techniques and approaches using multiple drawing mediums. We’ll build a greater understanding of the specificity of our own respective ways of seeing as we draw from varied subjects.

Life Drawing
Gesture, contour, cross contour, shading, compositional moves, animating touch, clothed form, anatomical form, form in motion...
This is a series of 6 small-sized classes focusing on drawing from the human body. We'll draw from a live model and from other animals and beings. Sometimes we'll even draw from inanimate forms, because if drawing is about nothing else it's about endowing any subject with being (including the page on which we draw). We'll work on how we compose figure on the page, how we draw a still and moving figure, how we grab attitude and spirit, how we break down parts so as not to be overwhelmed by the body's form, and we'll take on many more approaches to seeing, hand in hand with technical and material approaches. This class is for every level of experience, and will aim to be challenging while keeping people at ease.

Drawing for Glass Artists
Each class explores a mode of drawing that aims to be useful to artists whose primary meidum is glass.
This class runs a gamut of ways that drawing could be incorporated into one's practice using glass, and share the ways it already is put to use in the group. Our group will draw transparent objects using varying approaches, we'll draw in chalk as one does in a hot shop floor, we'll draw out a narrative of our life with glass, and work on installation drawings for how glass objects come into being in exhibition and other spaces. Time will be spent on practicing fast loose but clear ideation on the spot, for when working in a hot or cold shop or in front of a flame. The class leaves room for the individual ways in which drawing can clarify or enhance current practices. We'll join together in a drawing studio with glass in our minds and hearts.
Chalk Drawing
Working with chalk drawing on multiple surfaces, like paper, walls, and concrete. We'll study how we can use chalk to make murals, interventions, and street art.
Chalk Intervention by Elyse Bouchard
Time-Based Drawing for Portfolio
We'll work on how to create and include drawn gifs and other drawings-which-unfold-over-time into a compelling portfolio
